When to use aerial yoga silk/hammock bent in half or narrow in the Back Straddle poses?

Aerial yoga hammock/silk placement in Back Straddle poses to avoid lower back or sciatic nerve pain (the video explanation is down below).

I quite often receive emails and messages from aerial yoga practitioners from around the world about lower back or sciatic nerve pain while practicing Back Straddle poses.

When we’re practicing Back Straddle poses in aerial yoga, almost always we would use silk/hammock bent in half, especially if you hold poses for a longer time (5 and more breaths), and particularly in the Inverted Pigeon pose‼️ If you will hold this deep backbend with the narrow silk on one particular area on the back (vertebra or sacrum), you will put the whole body weight and pressure to that one area and this might inflict sciatic nerve pain or the feeling of the numb limb. So to keep it save, we use the silk/hammock bent in half to distribute the pressure of the silk evenly through the pelvis and leaving soft end by the sacrum/lower back while the harder edges by the thighs.

But when you’re practicing flows, sequences and transitioning from pose to the other pose in one breath one movement, then you may use narrow silk or bent in half, up to you☺️👌🧚‍♀️
